Editorial cover for the delete account chapter

What deletion does

Deletion removes the account, the reading preferences, the bookmark list and the format tracks from the desk's active systems. The deletion is irreversible after the retention window closes; the desk will not be able to recover the account or any of the data linked to it. The desk does not hold any real-money balance; the Blackjack In account is a reading account, not a payment account.

What deletion does not do

Deletion does not affect any real-money rummy account you hold on a separate platform. The desk does not run any tables, does not process any payments, and does not link to any specific real-money rummy platform from the editorial pages. The deletion is a deletion of the reading account only.

How to request deletion

  1. Sign in to your Blackjack In account.
  2. Open the account settings page.
  3. Click "Delete account" and confirm the request.
  4. The desk will send a confirmation email to the address on file.
  5. Click the confirmation link in the email within 24 hours.
  6. The account is queued for deletion at the end of the retention window.

The retention window

The desk holds the account data for a retention window of 30 days from the confirmation. The retention window is in place to allow a reader to reverse an accidental deletion request. After the retention window closes, the account and all linked data are removed from the desk's active systems. An anonymised log of the deletion request is kept for audit purposes; the log does not contain any of the data that was on the account.

What happens during the retention window

During the 30-day retention window, the account and the linked data are held in a "marked-for-deletion" state. The reader can reverse the deletion request by signing in and clicking "Restore account". After the retention window closes, the account and the linked data are removed from the desk's active systems. An anonymised log of the deletion request is kept for audit purposes; the log does not contain any of the data that was on the account.

What the retention window does not do: the retention window does not pause the deletion; the deletion is irreversible after the window closes. The retention window does not extend beyond 30 days; the desk does not currently offer a longer retention window. The retention window does not apply to the anonymised log; the log is kept for the lifetime of the desk.

What is removed at the end of the retention window

At the end of the retention window, the following data is removed: the email address, the password hash, the reading preferences, the bookmark list, the format tracks, the per-format track history, the device registrations, the notification opt-in, the contact form messages, the editorial inbox messages, and any custom reading queue. The following data is kept: the anonymised log of the deletion request, the anonymised log of the account creation, and the anonymised log of any correction requests or platform review submissions linked to the account.

What is not removed: the desk does not remove the data held by any third party. The desk does not have the legal authority to remove the data held by a payment processor, a marketing platform, an analytics provider or any other third party. The reader must contact the third party directly to request the removal of the data held by the third party.

What to do if the deletion fails

If the deletion request fails, the desk recommends checking the email address for a verification link. The deletion request requires a verification link; the link is sent to the email address on file and expires after 24 hours. If the link has expired, the reader can request a new link from the account settings page; the new link expires after 24 hours.

If the verification link is not the issue, the desk recommends contacting the customer-care line. The desk responds within two working days. The desk does not accept deletion requests over the phone; the deletion must be requested from the account settings page or from the contact form.
